Cruising may seem daunting to beginners. And I know many aren’t one percent sure if they will like it. But there is plenty to do for everyone on and off the ship. Below are eight tips that are sure to ease any cruise newbie’s worries.
- Budget Accordingly
Every cruise line prices things out differently. While researching each line, keep a list of what each one includes in its fare. Some cruise lines will charge extra for drink and dining packages. Gratuities aren’t always automatically included in your final price. Always make sure to read the fine print to know exactly what is included and what is not.
- Arrive at least a day early
It is always a good rule of thumb to arrive at least one day before your cruise embarks. Especially if you are flying, planes can easily get delayed or canceled for a variety of different reasons. The ship does not wait for anyone, regardless. So, whether you plan on driving or flying, give yourself plenty of time to get to your embarkation port.
- Bring a carry-on
Just like when boarding a plane, it’s always handy to have a carry-on with you when you board your ship. When you arrive at the dock, there are usually porters on standby to collect any luggage that will be taken to your stateroom. There are a few items other than your wallet to have with you before boarding. Make sure to carry on any medications or supplements, as well as your travel documents (ID, passport, etc) and poolside essentials.
- Stay on the ship’s time
This is especially crucial when you get off at a port. Before getting off, check what time it is on board. Be aware that your watch or phone can change to local time. And always make sure you know what time you need to be back on the ship as well. The ship will not wait for you unless you happen to book an excursion through the cruise line. But that is the only exception, as they are on a tight schedule.
- Board Early or Later
There are advantages to boarding at early and later times. Boarding earlier allows you to get on the ship sooner and explore your new ‘home’. Later boarding times allow you to get to your state rooms right away, as most cruise lines won’t let you into them before one in the afternoon. Both have the advantage of fewer crowds and fewer lines as well.
- Explore Your Ship Beforehand
One way to get to know the ship you will be on is by exploring the deck plans on the cruise line’s website. It is a great way to familiarize yourself with everything on board. You find exactly where your cabin is, where all the entertainment is, and where all the dining is. It is a great way to help visualize the layout of the ship. This is especially true if you want to be near certain amenities while choosing your cabin location.
- Take a Port Day Off
While it’s nice to explore ports, it’s just as nice hanging back on the ship on port days. This is because the ship becomes far less crowded. There are still plenty of things to do all over the ship. And it is also a great way to hang out on the lido deck without as many people. If you want to hop into the pool or hot tub, these are the best days to do it.
- Keep An On The Daily Planner
Every day, you will receive a daily planner in your mailbox. Most cruise lines also have an app where you can see what is happening every day. It helps to understand what is going on any given day and where it is located on the ship. This is a great way to plan out each day on the ship and to get the most out of your cruise.
